Most bath remodels I have performed were constrained by the size of the room in which they were done. A typical bathtub surround in the Roanoke Area is 60” or 5’ wide and 32” to 36” deep. When I remove the bathtub and create a shower stall in its place, homeowners typically are amazed by how much larger the shower seems to be. There is a practical reason for this, the new shower fills the entire space vs the bathtub that took up close to 40% of the floor space with its sides.
People may be inclined to think bigger is better, but actually that only works to a point. A larger shower stall may create issues with being able to access comfort (grab) bars, or more importantly, as you bath a larger shower may feel much colder because the heat and steam is not concentrated next to your body.
The difference between a 32” deep and a 36” deep shower is actually more noticeable than you’d think. Being able to stretch out a little and move your limbs without contacting the shower door or walls makes bathing much more pleasant. For many homes in older neighborhoods in Roanoke VA adding the 4” to depth is the limit to enlargement of the shower footprint, but proves to be an excellent solution. It provides a more enjoyable experience after the shower installation.
