For my purposes, a walk-in shower is exactly that, a shower you walk in. There are a few different types of walk-in showers I install my number on favorite of all times is
ZERO BARRIER
Here is an example of a true Zero-barrier-shower. The user can walk in without lifting their legs and possible loosing balance. This also will allow a shower chair to be used to help someone who can’t otherwise walk-in.
Step-in, or Curbed
Here is a corner shower with a curb. It was installed in Bonsac VA. This photo was taken before the shower door was installed. It features a seat to help the user be more comfortable while bathing. The curb is about 3” high and with the addition of a grab bar to aid in entry, it is safer than stepping over a tub. It also allows for more area inside the shower, making moving around and bathing easier.
This is the most popular type of shower installation I perform because it can be easily set in place without disturbing the house framing as is done for a zero barrier shower.
Roll-in Shower Pan
Here is a great roll-in shower installation I had the privilege of installing in Lynchburg several years ago. This achieves almost identical results as a zero barrier, but with a ‘bump’ to keep water in the shower pan. It features a gentle slope up the shower, then a gentle slope down into it. It is a good thread hold design for those not wanting to disturb the house’s framing, but still use a shower chair for access.
